Home

Corporal punishment is lawful in the home.

Schools

There is no explicit prohibition in legislation of corporal punishment in schools, though it is prohibited by regulation in the Public School System.

Penal system

Corporal punishment is unlawful as a sentence for crime. Article 1, section 4 of the Constitution of the Northern Mariana Islands (1977) states: “In all criminal prosecutions certain fundamental rights shall obtain … h) Cruel and unusual punishment shall not be inflicted.”

Corporal punishment is reportedly unlawful as a disciplinary measure in penal institutions but we have been unable to confirm this.
