Date: January 2006Committee on the Rights of the Child recommends prohibition in 41st sessionIn January 2006 the Committee on the Rights of the Child considered the state party reports of Azerbaijan, Ghana, Hungary, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Mauritius, Peru, Saudi Arabia, Thailand and Trinidad and Tobago and examined the government delegations on the implementation of the Convention in their respective countries. In the concluding observations, the Committee made strong recommendations against corporal punishment in every case. The Committee recommended that corporal punishment be prohibited in all settings, including in the family. Where legislation prohibiting corporal punishment already exists, the Committee noted in many cases that corporal punishment continued to be accepted and practised, and urged state parties to ensure laws are implemented and supported by public awareness campaigns. Extracts from the concluding observations concerning corporal punishment are available here. Updated individual country reports for each of the states examined in the 41st session are available here.
