European and Central Asian States commit to ending all corporal punishment

A preparatory meeting for the Special Session on children which brought together more than 50 European and Central Asian states adopted a commitment to take all necessary measures to end all forms of violence against children, including corporal punishment.

The Berlin Commitment, adopted at the Berlin Conference on Children in Europe and Central Asia (16 — 18 May 2001), expresses concern at the growing numbers of children across the regions at risk of all forms of violence and abuse, including corporal punishment. The statement has been fed in to the preparatory process for the UN General Assembly Special Session on Children, taking place in New York from September 19 to 21, 2001.
