Universal Periodic Review summaries now available
The first session of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) the examination by the Human Rights Council of states’ implementation of their human rights obligations will be held in April 2008. As part of the process, non-government organisations ("stakeholders") submit relevant information in advance which is then summarised into a single document for each state before being presented to the Council. Summaries of the information submitted for the first session have now been published.
Each summary contains a paragraph on the legality of corporal punishment of children, based on information submitted by the Global Initiative. The summaries are available from the UPR search page, or directly by clicking on the following links (paragraph numbers indicate where the information on corporal punishment is to be found):
Algeria (para. 22); Argentina (paras. 16 and 18); Bahrain (para. 16); Brazil (para. 25); Czech Republic (para. 24); Ecuador (not yet available); India (para. 25); Indonesia (para. 13); Morocco (para. 14); Netherlands (para. 19); Philippines (para. 25); Poland (para. 12); South Africa (paras. 17 and 32); Tunisia (para. 15); UK (paras. 15 and 23)
States’ national reports and compilations of UN information on each state have also been published. The compilations include information on previous concerns and recommendations of human rights treaty monitoring bodies to the states concerned. Some, but not all, refer to recommendations relating to corporal punishment of children.
