UN General Assembly calls for elimination of school and penal system corporal punishment
A children’s rights resolution adopted by the General Assembly on December 23 2005 calls (para. 15(d)) on states to “take measures to eliminate the use of corporal punishment in schools” and to ensure (para. 28) that no child in detention is sentenced to corporal punishment.
Attempts to amend these provisions, led by Singapore, to change “eliminate” to “strictly regulate”, were supported by only 11 states and the resolution was ultimately adopted with only one state the US - voting against adoption.
