Committee on the Rights of the Child issues concluding observations at 47th session, Jan/Feb 2008
At its 47th session, the Committee on the Rights of the Child considered the second state party report of the Dominican Republic and the initial report of Timor-Leste.
The Committee urged the Dominican Republic to enact legislation explicitly prohibiting corporal punishment in education settings, alternative care settings and within the family environment. The Committee recommended that Timor-Leste explicitly prohibit corporal punishment “in all settings, including through awareness-raising campaigns aimed at families, the school system and other educational settings”.
The Committee recommended that both states implement the recommendations made by the independent expert in the report of the UN Study on Violence against Children, “to ensure that every child is protected from all forms of physical, sexual and mental violence”. The report of the study set a target date of 2009 for prohibition of all corporal punishment of children.
See the Committee’s recommendations to state parties concerning corporal punishment.
Further information on the legality of corporal punishment in the states examined is available in the detailed country reports for Dominican Republic and Timor-Leste.
