Beyond the Good Schools

The activities of the first two Good Schools were publicised in the media, to create a public dialogue on the nature of schools and violence against children. Child committee members and their teachers were interviewed on various radio stations about the changes in their schools.
Children used the study about violence against children to create and act out a movie on their experience of violence, called ‘Through my eyes’. This was broadcast on three leading TV stations in Uganda.
Teachers from both schools also talked about their experience on the radio and on TV.

A different group of children also took part in days of community activism on violence against children in ten different districts.
Children working with Save the Children in Uganda wrote a petition about corporal punishment and delivered it to local council leaders for action. They also had children's debates at various levels in the children's parliament. These children chose to do this after they had had the chance to learn about their rights in school and with Save the Children in Uganda.

All this meant that there was lots of publicity about the campaign against corporal punishment. Lots of people had the chance to hear about it and some other schools got interested in becoming ‘Good Schools’. To help them, Raising Voices has made a ‘Good Schools Toolkit,’ which will help children, teachers, parents and the community to work together to make schools safer. See the toolkit here.
UNICEF and the government Ministry of Education and Sports worked with Raising Voices to make a handbook about positive discipline and alternatives to corporal punishment. It will be sent to all schools in Uganda.
People from other schools and organisations often visit the two original ‘Good Schools’ to talk about their experiences and learn more.
It wasn't all easy! Read about some of the challenges that children faced when they took action.
