In April 2009, more than 200 children and adults in Amman, the capital of Jordan, gathered to call for stricter laws to protect children from abuse.

The event was attended by the Queen of Jordan, who signed a wall painting by artists and children which calls for child abuse to be stopped, and lit a candle for the souls of the two children, who died at a very early age after being subject to domestic violence.

Read a news story about the protest (Jordan Times, 30th April 2009).

The event was organised by the Jordan River Foundation.

The Jordan River Children Program works to protect the rights and needs of children, through:

  • Intervention services and rehabilitation of abused children through a therapeutic center.
  • Several community-based preventive activities and projects targeting parents and children throughout the Kingdom to raise awareness about healthy child-rearing practices and equip children with necessary skills to protect themselves from abuse.
  • Free counseling services that provide information, advice and counseling to anyone concerned about a child's safety.
  • Public education to raise awareness about child abuse and provide alternatives on positive parenting.
  • Child protection training and workshops for organizations and individuals involved in the care, protection and education of children.

(Dar Al Aman, mentioned in the news story, is run by the Jordan River Foundation).
