Children in Indonesia took part in a major piece of research, entitled ‘The Quality of Care in Childcare Institutions in Indonesia’ that was carried out in 2007 by Save the Children in cooperation with the Ministry of Social Affairs and Unicef. This focussed on the relevance and quality of the services provided to children in institutional care in Indonesia.

The research covered professional practice and personal care. Children were one of the main groups of people who took part in that research. Violence against children, in particular the use of physical and humiliating punishment by institution staff, and also by teachers in schools, was one of the main issues identified by the research.

Here are some of the things the children said happened to them:

  1. Punching, slapping, hitting with wood or rattan canes, pinching stomachs, pulling ears, making the children crawl in the mud, making them run around the field, carrying heavy loads, making them stand in the sun, doing push ups or ‘scout jumps’, throwing dirty water on them, shaving the child’s head in public as well as locking them up in toilets and other forms of isolation.
  2. Being called names, public shaming, ‘being put on trial’, food is withheld, extra and heavy chores, having to learn by heart lengthy parts of the Koran etc.
  3. Some cases of children being made to participate in the physical punishment of other children.

Following this, Save the Children supported children living in institutional care in two provinces of Indonesia to conduct their own research about their lives and any issues that mattered to them. Find out how the children did this.
